Mason Greenwood who is currently 23-year-old, has officially switched his international allegiance from England to Jamaica, according to multiple reports from several credible sources.

Greenwood’s decision comes after the English Football Association (FA) made it clear he would not be considered for selection again, effectively closing the door on his Three Lions career after earning just one cap in 2020.

The striker’s exclusion from England’s plans followed his suspension by Manchester United in 2020 when he was charged with attempted rape, assault, and coercive behaviour—charges that he denied and were later dropped.

Despite his legal exoneration, Greenwood’s reputation and career took a hit, leading to his departure from United. He initially revived his form during a loan spell in Spain with Getafe before joining French side Marseille permanently last summer. Greenwood has since flourished in Ligue 1, where he leads the scoring charts with 12 goals this season.

Greenwood qualifies to represent Jamaica through his father, and his paperwork has been completed, pending one final signature from his mother. Although not expected to feature in Jamaica’s colours for months, Greenwood is seen as a valuable asset for the Reggae Boyz going forward.

Jamaica’s national team coach, former Manchester United assistant Steve McClaren has worked with Greenwood in the past and earlier expressed desire to have him in the team.

Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) president Michael Ricketts reportedly confirmed the news which started making rounds initially in British media, stating, “Yes, that true,” to Our on Tuesday.
