Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce Wins Laureus Sportswoman of The Year Award For the First Time – See Videos and Photos

Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce’s accomplishments continue to pile up after she was awarded the Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year award Monday, May 8th, in Paris. Fraser-Pryce’s sixth nomination for the award earned her Laureus Sportswoman of the Year status for the first time.

Having broken the 10.70-second barrier in the 100m seven times in one year, including winning the world title, the 36-year-old mother is coming off one of the best athletic seasons of her illustrious career as age doesn’t seem to slow her down.

With her victory in the World Championship, she became the oldest female World Champion in any individual event, almost fourteen years after she won her first global 100m title. She also won a fifth Diamond League 100m title to cap off her amazing year.

After Elaine Thompson-Herah, Fraser-Pryce is the second Jamaican sprinter to win the award in a row. In the award’s history, Fraser-Pryce will be the third Jamaican athlete to win it. In 2022, Elaine Thompson-Herah won the award for her accomplishments in 2021, and Usain Bolt won in 2009, 2010, 2013, and 2017.

Among the other women vying for the accolade were sprinter Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, footballer Alexia Putellas, swimmer Katie Ledecky, alpine skier Mikaela Shiffrin and tennis player Iga Swiatek. Also on the night, Argentine soccer superstar Lionel Messi won the male category of the annual Laureus World Sports Awards.
