English League strugglers Chelsea defeated the high-flying German side Borussia Dortmund in a mouth-watering encounter in London. Chelsea started the must-win match, looking to make up for their 1-0 defeat away to the German side, who are level on points with Bayern Munich at the top of the German Bundesliga.
Chelsea began the match playing on the front foot as they launched countless attacks resulting in Havertz hitting the post and having a brilliant finish from outside the box rule off for offside.
Jamaican-born Raheem Sterling was at fault for Havertz’s wonderful finish being ruled off as he was penalized for straying offside. However, the ex-Manchester City player made up for his error after a smart finish from inside the six-yard box, to put Chelsea 1-0 up on the night and put them level in the tie.
Chelsea started the second half how they ended the first, creating the majority of the dangerous attack of both teams. Ironically Chelsea’s second goal wasn’t created by any intricate passes but rather from a controversial penalty that was taken twice.
A retake was ordered due to encroachment by a Dortmund Player after Havertz’s initial effort hit the post. Despite the pressure, he held his nerve, picking the same spot and converting at the second attempt in the 53rd minute to put Chelsea through to the next round edging out Dortmund 2-1.
On March 17, the Champions League quarterfinal draw will take place, and the first and second legs will be played on April 11, 12 and April 18, 19.
