Ward Trying To Escape Juvenile Centre Gets Shot And Dies
A ward from Metcalfe Street Secure Juvenile Remand Centre was trying to escape the premises when he was shot by security personnel and subsequently died.
Reportedly, the teen, Henrique Hemmings, turned 18 while he was hospitalized and he died from his injuries Wednesday.
Reports from the Department of Correctional Services inform that Hemmings attempted to escape the institution on February 10 when he was shot and taken to the hospital for treatment.
According to the department, the assistant staff officer, who was assigned to the institution, reported that Hemmings and another ward escaped from their dormitories at approximately 5:45 a.m.
While they detained one of the wards on the compound, the other ward began climbing over the wall. The report continued to say that sentry officers fired shots, and the ward was injured.
The Department informed that a nearby police team was alerted by the shots fired and afterwards they found Hemmings on the ground with a gunshot wound.
The incident has been under examination by the Independent Commission of Investigations.
