Jamaica’s New Head Coach Steve McClaren Unveiled: Video

After weeks of no head coach, the Reggae Boyz’s new head coach Steve McClaren was unveiled Thursday morning. McClaren who was coaching at Manchester United before taking up the Jamaica Men’s National Team job is tasked with ‘mission 2026’, to take Jamaica to the next World Cup.
On Leon Bailey who has not played for Jamaica in months, McClaren details that he’s looking to talk to Bailey to try and resolve the issues, “i understand top players” he outlines as he alludes to his past experiences at Manchester United and being a former head coach of England.
According to McClaren, the island will need our best players, however, the players need to commit once they are selected for the team.
With regards to his type of footballing style/philosophy, McClaren states that he will be assessing the Jamaican culture, “the system and the way of play depends on the players,” he stated before detailing that the best players are needed in the team first, then a system can be decided.
Nevertheless, he expressed that the important principles are, that the team needs to be hard to beat, the team needs to commit and be a “good team without the ball”. He also stated that the players need to know “how to play football”.
The new coach outlines that the team will not succeed “without Togetherness, without team spirit, without fighting for each other, running for each other, working for each other, all towards a common goal.”
As reported by the Jamaica Football Federation(JFF), McClaren ‘ticked all the boxes’ with regards to requirements for the next Reggae Boyz head coach. It was also noted that McClaren was picked out of over 50 candidates for the position.
McClaren’s first game in charge of the Boyz will be on September 6, vs Cuba.
