Despite the backlash she has received over the past several months, controversial Crab Circle vendor Alice Waugh is still eager to return to the National Heroes Circle food spot. A return the Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC) says is dependent on multiple factors.

Waugh pleaded guilty to breaching the Public Health Act and was fined $250,000 on Wednesday. According to Waugh, she was forced to borrow the money to pay the fine as she has been unemployed since leaving Crab Circle.

Speaking with the Jamaica Star, Waugh shared that the people she took the loan from are expecting her to pay them back when she returns to Crab Circle. The vendor disclosed that she has been facing a tough time since leaving the location, which was the source of her income for over 40 years.

“A mi livelihood weh mi use to [ … ] mi nuh know nothing else [ … ] One year mi lock down a mi yard. Mi nah work, nothing at all. See mi deh yah lie down every day. Mi tell all the judge seh a nuff time mi nuh have food fi eat, a water mi afi drink. Water many nights and go ah mi bed, nothing to eat!” Waugh stated.

Despite the viral video that revealed her defecating behind her stall at Crab Circle, Waugh said she still has loyal customers who are also eager for her return. The vendor has already begun the process for her potential return and has signed up for the mandatory HEART/NSTA Trust courses.

She has also applied for her food handlers’ permit. While Waugh has expressed that she is willing to complete the requirements necessary for her return, KSAMC CEO Robert Hill says several factors are being considered.

Hill explained that the decision would have to be in line with the Public Health Act and the KSAMC laws and regulations governing vending. Additionally, Hill said stakeholders, as well as the Kingston and St. Andrew Public Health Department, must be consulted.
