The Reggae Boyz played against Mexico at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico moments ago in the third and final round of the CONCACAF World Cup Qualifiers. The match ended with the Mexicans scoring twice while the Jamaican managed to score once.
The first half ended 0-0 with Mexico dominating, however, was unable to find the back of the net.
For the most part, Jamaica played the ball long in hope that it would stick to one of the Jamaican’s feet but in most cases, the ball went right back into Jamaica’s half placing the Mexicans on the front foot many times.
The long ball up the field was clearly a tactical ploy by couch Whitmore as he seemingly trusted in his defence to keep the ball out of the back of the net.
Captain Blake pulled off several eye-catching saves throughout the match.
After much continued pressure the Mexicans managed to score in the 50th minute they also hit the post in the 62nd minute.
Shamar Nicholson scored in the 65ft minute after one of the long balls that were played up the field was not cleared properly by a Mexican defender, the ball landed at shamar’s foot and he let off a first time shot placing the ball beyond the Mexican keeper into the back of the net.
The Jamaicans saw a draw in sight after much defending, however, the Mexicans scored in the 98th minute to win the match.
Notably, many of Jamaica’s star players including Michail Antonio and Leon bailey did not play because of restrictions by England due to COVID-19.
Jamaica is currently ranked 48th in world FIFA rankings while Mexico is ranked at 9th and USA at 10th.
The Reggae Boyz have only qualified for the World Cup once, back in 1998.
