As the nation reels from Sunday’s mass shooting in Clarendon, Prime Minister Andrew Holness updated the nation on Monday, disclosing the perpetrators that have been linked to the murders so far.
17 residents of the Cherry Tree Lane community were shot on Sunday, leaving eight victims dead and nine hospitalised, the youngest being a 1- year-old. During a press conference on Monday, Holness said that all dimensions of the attack are currently being explored.
According to the prime minister, the authorities have so far linked the mass shooting to multiple different sources, including individuals overseas.
“We know that persons overseas are involved and connected in this act. We know that persons who are incarcerated presently have connection in this act. We know that multiple gangs are connected and involved in this act,” Holness stated.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Fitz Bailey previously compared the murders to an act of terror, and his sentiments were repeated by Prime Minister Holness, who said the matter would be treated as such.
“Every gang, every person, who in any way facilitated, provided the arms, or were involved and pulled the trigger themselves; we will find you and we will bring you to justice. I want that to be absolutely clear. We will not treat this as another criminal act. We will treat this as an act of terror.”
The prime minister added that the perpetrators of organised armed violence are criminal terrorists and should be treated as such.
