Shenseea Rejects The Title ‘Dancehall Queen’

The Dancehall artiste Shenseea, otherwise known as Shen Yeng, recently went on Instagram Live to discuss her latest song that was released on January 21st. The song called ‘Lick’ features American rapper, Megan Thee Stallion, who has won three Grammys for her saucy musical talents.

The Live started off with Shenseea encouraging her fans to keep streaming, and then it took another turn when she announced that this is only the beginning of something new.

Shenseea declared to everyone that she fully intended on branching off into different genres, as that has always been her dream. She added that persons were encouraging her to focus on Dancehall, but this was when she let it be known that she has no interest in being the Queen Of Dancehall because there is so much more she wanted than that.

“I told myself, I am gonna do Dancehall for five years. I have given myself to Dancehall, I have given y’all hits upon hits upon hits upon hits, upon hits for five years,” is what she stated and added that she only did it that long for her Caribbean people and her country.

To prevent any misunderstandings, she clarified that she would not be leaving Dancehall permanently, she would simply be exploring more genres. Her words boldly express that she will not be placed in any box for anyone’s happiness because her aspirations in life were far greater than being a Dancehall Queen.

While explaining how some persons tend to drag down female artistes for having the same flow and same sound, Shenseea stated, “I’m never going to be an artiste that y’all say, oh I sound the same” She told her fans to stop complaining about her versatility and some persons saw this as she throwing subs at Spice.

Spice had ceased the title ‘Queen of Dancehall’ after Lady Saw (Marion Hall) removed her crown to be a gospel artiste and minister. There isn’t much evidence as to why Shenseea and Spice ended their friendship in the past, but it is speculated that it happened sometime after Shenseea started releasing hits upon hits after her collaboration with Vybz Kartel in 2016.

Showing that she is making big changes in her career, Shenseea revealed that she has huge plans for this year, which includes her debut album called Alpha. The album is set to release March 11, and it is declared to be for everyone as she transitions into different genres.

She explained that the album is called Alpha because it resonates with her personality and how she has always been dominant and felt like a leader throughout her life. Throughout the Instagram Live, Shenseea constantly reminds her fans that this is the start of something amazing.
