Locked-up dancehall star Vybz Kartel and Co-accused men can finally breathe easy after waiting months to be granted conditional leave to approach the Privy Council in the UK in the hope to overturn their current murder convictions.
The decision was handed down today Friday, September 25th by the Court of Appeal.
Adidja Azim Palmer more commonly known as Vybz Kartel and his “chargies” were experiencing delays in their request to the Jamaican court of appeal to approve their case to go to the Privy Council.
So much so that the team of lawyers had take action on the 29th of June 2020 after the appeals for Vybz Kartel, Shawn “Storm” Campbell, Andre St. John and Kahira Jones were thrown out on the grounds that there were not any major violations of constitutional rights.
This was done even though there were many inconsistencies highlighted in the case as well as issues discovered with the Jury.
While speaking today to a TVJ news reporter, Attorney Bert Samuels said “its a very good day for us and we are expecting victory in the privy council” he also mentioned that the team including Vybz Kartel and Shawn Storm is “very elated” with the decision which they were patiently waiting for.
Now that the request is granted Vybz Kartel and company now have a short time to gather all necessary information and arguments to present to the Privy Council before moving forward.
Vybz Kartel is currently represented by Isat Buchanan while Andre St. John and Kahira Jones are under the legal leadership of John Clarke while Shawn Campbell has Bert and Bianca Samuels as his lawyers.
The men were sentenced on April 3rd, 2014 by Justice Lennox Campbell after they were convicted for the 2011 murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams who was allegedly killed after he stole one of Vybz Kartel’s guns.
Since 2011 a body is yet to be found nor a weapon that was used to carry out the crime, this leaves many to speculate that Lizard could be overseas doing ok, Popcaan also recently joked about only one Lizard still missing for years now.

A decade ago Vybz Kartel was arrested on 29 September 2011 by the Jamaica police with regards to marijuana possession. Kartel was later charged by Jamaica’s Major Investigation Taskforce (MIT) for the killing of a Jamaican businessman, Barrington Burton, conspiracy and illegal possession of a firearm, other charges later racked up.
Ever since then there has been a longstanding battle between the legal teams of the men and the Jamaican Justice system for what the lawyers are saying was an unconstitutional conviction.
