Khadija Shaw to Miss Upcoming Reggae Girlz Matches Against Brazil

Despite earlier speculations as to whether or not Khadija Shaw will play for Jamaica in the upcoming matches vs Brazil, those speculations have been put to bed, following her recent injury. Shaw revealed earlier this week that she had undergone surgery after breaking her leg during Manchester City’s match against West Ham.

The player also shared that she will be heading into rehab, which will see her sit out the remainder of the Women’s Super League (WSL) season. Shaw scored 21 times in 18 games for City, she is currently leading on the WSL table.

How the club fairs without the star player will be determined later this month when they face Chelsea in the final. However, the Reggae Girlz’ absence will not only be felt in Europe, as many local football fans had hoped to see her lead the national team during their matches against Brazil.

Shaw, as well as several other players from the Girlz 2023 World Cup squad, were suspended from the senior team last year after sitting out the Gold Cup qualifier matches against Panama and Guatemala.

Their suspensions happened amid several long-standing issues between the players and the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF). Despite these issues remaining unresolved, fans have called for the members of the 2023 squad to make a return.

The team is set to face Brazil next month in two international friendlies, the JFF recently announced the match dates as June 1 and 4. While it remains to be seen if the federation can finally repair its partnership with the available suspended Girlz in the near future, Shaw will most certainly be unable to join them on the field.
