Shenseea’s new album Never Gets Late Here was released on Friday, and the Dancehall artiste discussed the project during an interview released earlier today. The singer also discussed the backlash she received after venturing into different genres, as well as her relationships and why she has chosen to keep them private.

Never Gets Late Here is Shenseea’s sophomore album following the release of her first studio album, ALPHA, in 2022. Shenseea debuted the first song off the album, Hit & Run, featuring Masicka, in January, a decision the singjay said was made to satisfy her fans’ call for more Reggae/Dancehall tracks.

Speaking on Hot 97, Shenseea expressed that her core fanbase felt like she was leaving them behind, but she had been working on new Reggae/Dancehall tracks for the album. She further explained that she initially felt like she was being held back by her fans, who wanted her to create the same type of music.

However, the artiste shared that she has gained perspective over the past few months and now understands that her fans wanted music that resonated with them and the culture.

“All the talking that they were doing, I feel like it was more of trying to hold me back. But you know, when I sat and I just look at everything that was going on in the past couple months, I was like, Okay, now I can see what was taking place at the time. Wi just do great music and fix it,” Shenseea stated.

The Good Comfort singer went on to discuss some of the inspiration behind the songs featured on her new album, such as Keep A Place. According to Shenseea, the track was partially inspired by the long-distance relationships she has had as well as a desire for Jamaicans to never forget her.

Further speaking on relationships, the artiste said she is willing to write about them in her music but keeps them private as she takes them very seriously.

“You can hear about the mess. I’ll write about it. But for you to see me with this partner, and it didn’t work out, and then you see me with another, and then you see me, it’s not my vibe. And I’ve learnt because I’ve seen so many women go through it, and they’re just normally living their lives,” Shenseea stated.

In the 26 minutes long interview, Shenseea, 27, also talked about loving the Bob Marley: One Love Biopic so much that she already watched it twice because it reminds her of her own struggle.
