Elaine Thompson-Herah Recruits New Coach to Finish Remainder of the 2023 Season

Following a difficult start to the 2023 track and field season, Elaine Thompson-Herah has enlisted former MVP coach Shanikie Osbourne for the remainder of her season.
After securing her second Olympic double sprint title in August 2021, Thompson-Herah confirmed her departure from the coach Stephen Francis-led MVP Track Club in October of the same year. The sprinter then commenced training under the guidance of husband and former athlete Derron Herah.
Thompson-Herah’s subsequent seasons on the track have yet to reach the heights of her career in 2021, with the 31-year-old struggling with multiple injuries. Reports state that the Olympic champion has now temporarily employed Osbourne to coach her for the remainder of the season.
Osbourne was engaged by Thompson-Herah after her failure to qualify for the 100m in the World Championships, which will take place in Budapest, Hungary, this month. Thompson-Herah, who placed fifth in the 100m at the National Championships in July, qualified for the relay pool but not the individual event.
Osbourne shared with Radio Jamaica that the pair had previously worked together while at MVP, and it is not yet clear how long she will be working with the sprinter as it is up to Thompson-Herah to decide.
“Probably she’s trying to see how things work out to the end of the season, and then she’ll make a decision, but it’s up to her,” Osbourne stated.
Along with her former position at MVP, Osbourne previously coached at Papine High and has coached the likes of 2019 World Championships winner Tajay Gayle.
