New And Improved Prison To Be Built In St. Catherine

During a meeting with members of the Standing Finance Committee of the House of Representatives on Tuesday, Dr. Horace Chang, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Security advised of the new and improved prison facility that will be built in St. Catherine this year.
Dr. Chang stated that the prison will be built on 300 acres of former sugar land and will house prisoners deemed to be “high-value criminals”. He then added that “a significant number of the contract killings in Jamaica emerges from our prisons or from overseas” which is of major concern.
The National Security Minister also added that additional correctional officers will need to be recruited and trained in operating the prison facility.
This meeting was in the deliberation of the 2022/23 Estimates of Expenditure.
