Veteran journalist Dionne Jackson Miller tackles finance minister Nigel Clarke over the glaring disparity in the annual salaries for Jamaican parliamentarians compared to other countries in the Caribbean, namely Trinidad and Tobago And Bahamas.

However, in the middle of her presenting the data, Nigel Clarke seemingly tried to derail her. The short clip from her weekly television programme All Angles, which has since gone viral, shows the minister over-talking the female journalist; in an attempt to hinder her from stating the data.

“You don’t want me share with the public? You stopping me from sharing, okay, let me go ahead,” Jackson Miller asked as she was repeatedly interrupted by the minister. Eventually, Nigel Clarke allowed the veteran journalist to present the information.

The data presented by Jackson Miller showed a startling difference in salaries of Jamaican parliamentarians as their wages doubled and some cases, tripled the wages of Bahamas and Trinidad and Tobago parliamentarians.

In response to data reeled off by the journalist, Nigel Clarke says because of the advantageous position Jamaica has found itself in after the recent pandemic, the country can afford these levels of wage increases.

Nigel Clarke also pointed to the restructuring of Jamaica’s public sector, unlike the other Caribbean countries mentioned in the data. Another reason outlined for the controversial wage hike by the minister is that they are trying to recruit the best candidates for parliamentarian positions. Therefore, the handsome salaries will serve as motivation.
