Speaking on her relationship with her husband, Will Smith, and his infamous Oscars slap, Jada Pinkett-Smith has revealed that she and Will have been separated for seven years and that Chris Rock asked her out on a date amid rumours they were getting a divorce.
The actress and talk show host’s revelations were made as she continues to promote her memoir, Worthy, which is scheduled for release on October 17. According to Jada, she and Will separated in 2016 after tying the knot in 1997, but they were not ready to reveal the separation to the public at the time as they were still trying to figure things out.
As she believed that they would work out their marital problems, the Set It Off actress said she promised that there would never be a reason for her and Will to get a legal divorce, and she has not been able to break that promise.
Despite the couple’s happy public appearances, they have been living completely separate lives and had been separated for six years at the time Will slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars in 2022.
Speaking with People Magazine, Jada said she thought the slap was a planned skit for the Oscars and has spoken to Chris since the show. She shared that years prior, reports often emerged that she and Will were getting a divorce, and Chris had called her amid the rumours one summer to ask her on a date.

“…He called me, and basically he was like, ‘I’d love to take you out,’ and I was like, ‘What do you mean?’ He was like, ‘Well, aren’t you and Will getting a divorce?’ I was like, ‘No. Chris, those are just rumours.’ He was appalled. And he profusely apologised, and that was that,” Jada stated.
