It’s a debate that amplified following Buju Banton’s Drink Champs interview which was released in early August, in the interview Buju Banton Stated, “they don’t give f**king props back to Dancehall and Reggae…”

He also said, “What i was disappointed in is that they didn’t try to connect with Jamaica the roots, they connected with everyone else except us,” he outlines before labelling the Afrobeat genre as “f**kery” because it’s not “freeing Africa”.

Weeks later, Mr. Vegas talks on the matter, according to Vegas, “before Afrobeats” got popular, Jamaican artistes usually charged a lot and made a lot of money on trips to Africa to perform, never the less, that money source has dried up since Afrobeats got popular leaving less need for overseas artistes.

“There is a level of hatred coming from some people… yuh can sense the hatred to African, those who are living in Africa,” he also detailed that it’s similar for Africans who are living outside of Africa and it’s “very unhealthy”. “I never see Chinese” on the internet just tearing into each other said Vegas, “black people we just so voil against each other and vicious,” he stated.

He next stated, “People talking about Afro music and the way it’s not preaching peace… i sense a level of jealousy from other Africans towards the Afro musicians… i sense a level of jealousy from even people from in our culture.”

He outlined that the African(Afrobeats) genre has been very successful and many people aside from Buju Banton have been showing dislike for the genre out of jealousy. According to Vegas, Afrobeats is “happy music” and it’s “very unfair” when outsiders talk down on the music and compare it to Reggae when it’s two totally different types of music.

Vegas express that Afrobeats riddims are fast-paced pace making them suited for dancing and partying while Reggae which features slow riddims cause listeners to relax and meditate.
