It has been one year since Bob Marley’s biopic, Bob Marley: One Love, premiered on Valentine’s Day last year. Jamaicans had mixed reactions to the movie, and in an interview aired on Saturday, Vybz Kartel shared his opinion on why he believes some Jamaicans have not watched the film.

Speaking on Drink Champs, the Fever deejay revealed that he has not yet watched the biopic in its entirety and has only seen clips. Kartel said Jamaicans who have spent their entire lives learning about Marley have developed biases for the parts of his life that they would like to see depicted.

The artiste also highlighted the controversy surrounding the depiction of Cindy Breakspeare, whom Marley had an affair with while married to Rita Marley.

“We know Bob. We grew up hearing his life story. Even a lot of people in Jamaica who did watch the movie they were like, Oh, why didn’t Cindy Breakspear, which is Junior Gong’s mom, why didn’t she get more time in the film? Oh, it is because Rita did the film. So it’s that serious in Jamaica. Because you know people have their favourites,” Kartel stated.

During his interview, Kartel also discussed losing this year’s Best Reggae Grammy album to Bob Marley: One Love – Music Inspired by the Film. While the deejay said he thinks he should have won, as Marley has won so many awards, he expressed that he is not bitter about losing to the Reggae Legend.
