Her father, Donald Jasper Harris, was born on August 23, 1938, in Jamaica and later became a prominent economist and professor emeritus at Stanford University. He hails from Brown’s Town in St Ann. Her mother, Shyamala Gopalan, was born in southern India. The two met as graduate students, embodying the diverse immigrant experience that has shaped America.
