Earthquake Felt in Kingston, St. Andrew and St. Catherine

Many Jamaicans are taking to social media platforms to share their accounts about a reported earthquake that rocked sections of Kingston and St. Andrew Tuesday evening.
According to the Earthquake Unit located at The University of West Indies, Mona Campus, “a minor earthquake was felt in Jamaica at 5:46 PM EST (local time) on Tuesday, July 16, 2024.”
The report went on to detail that the magnitude of the quake was 3.7, with a focal depth of 6.2km. The quake was felt in Kingston, St. Andrew and St. Catherine.
Weather Jamaica shared a post at about 6 PM on Tuesday, asking these questions, “Did you just feel that earthquake? In what Jamaican parish are you located right now? How was the shaking? Most importantly, did you drop, cover & hold as you were supposed to?”
A graphic was also shared, highlighting a possible epicentre somewhere in the middle of Jamaica.
One person replied to Weather.Jamaica, stating, “St Andrew, my 14 yr old felt it, i didbt,” on the other hand another person commented, “In st. Andrew and felt nth.” Also, “Yes I did in new Kingston.”
Romeich also took to Instagram to ask, “Who feel earthquake????”
One Instagram user wrote, “Me feel sumn but me think a me mek the bed a shake 😂😢,” in response.
Another person made this statement, “Mi seh is catastrophic piece a earthquake been a mek offa wi from weh day!😮” Then asked, “What a day when it get through?”
Jamaica’s most devastating earthquake took place back in 1692, on June 7. While the quake was felt islandwide, most of the damage was done at Port Royal located in Kingston.
