Junelle Bromfield Says Her “Melanin too dark to throw her shades”: Receives More Criticism for Finishing Last in 400m Semi-Final

26-year-old Jamaican 400m athlete, Junelle Bromfield who has been at the centre of divided opinions in recent weeks has been receiving extra backlash online since she failed to advance to the final of the women’s 400m at the Paris Olympics. On the other hand, many Jamaicans are congratulating her for her efforts.
Bromfield who was a junior standout, finished 8th place in the semi-final heat-1, crushing any hopes of advancing to the final. The placement caused reactions online, such as, “So Noah woman came last,” another person wrote, “The traitor come last…good fi har chat too much.”

On the other hand, in support, one person stated, “So proud of you for facing this challenge head on at the highest level.” Another commented, “My sweet JB, it takes heart to represent the way you do. Thank you and best wishes.”
Bromfield who has been facing criticism from many of Jamaica’s supporters since her boyfriend Noah Lyles revealed that she told him secrets about Jamaican athletes, is doubling down on her stance of supporting her American boyfriend regardless of the backlash she has been receiving.
In her latest social media post, made Thursday morning, the Jamaican highlights her ‘dark’ completion being a barrier for all the shades that are being thrown at her. She stated, “Melanin too dark to throw her shades”.
She shared the short statement along with a darkened photo of herself which highlights her strong “Melanin”. Notably, many Jamaican supporters have had derogatory things to say about her dark complexion online.
Days ago, prior to the semi-final, she pointed out that she would be ditching makeup, wig and filter to show off her Natural beauty, she stated, “On to the next round 🥳 Embracing my natural beauty , NO MAKEUP, NO WIG ,NO FILTERS 100 % melanin”.
