Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II on September 8, the government announced 12 days of mourning and several other observances that were to be followed by members of the public. Some have since expressed their objection, with legendary Jamaican actor Oliver Samuels joining the vices of dissidence and declaring his disapproval of the government’s decision.
For years, the theatre veteran has shared his outlook on Jamaican life and culture through creatively crafted commentary within comedic skits and performances; however, he has never been what he calls “a political creature.” But, according to Samuels, the government’s declaration of a period of mourning is a situation in which a citizen of Jamaica must express their views.
In a video recently posted to his Instagram, the actor called into question the government’s decision to mourn the Queen’s death for 12 days after 60 years of independence from the monarchy.
“Mourning for what? In a we desperation the Queen…eva see it fit fi seh mek she gi we sumting,” Samuels asked.
The actor went on to express his bewilderment at a Governor General’s employment and the Queen’s position as head of state. Samuels ended his video with a call for all Caribbean people to follow in the steps of Barbadian Prime Minister Mia Mottley and remove all traces of the British monarchy to finally claim true independence.
The period of mourning for Queen Elizabeth II began on September 8 and will end on September 19. The official day of mourning will be observed on the 18, during which it is recommended that no celebratory activities take place. The public was also informed that only authorised activities related to the day were approved and that all social events should be postponed.
