Reggae Interviews got a rare chance to speak at length to Frederick “Toots” Hibbert at Reggae Centre in Kingston, Jamaica. In this interview, the father of Reggae spoke about “Got To Be Tough” which was his first album in over 10 years.
The currently released album features Ziggy Marley on a new interpretation of ‘Three Little Birds’ and Toots reminisces about the days of Ska and Rocksteady as well as “Do The Reggay”.
This is one of Toots’ last interviews and it was done in this year, 2020, back in February.
Toots Hibbert explains that because of his extensive touring he decided to not put out any album however seemingly since the clampdown in travels Toots decided to release a project.
He was great friends with Bob Marley, Toots shares some of their history in music and why he sampled Bob Marley on his new album “That was one of my favourite song… that bob wrote…”, “Me and Bob was like brothers you know”.

Toots who has been in the reggae business for almost 60 years has won the Jamaica festival competition 3 times and he was placed in the top-ten of the most recent competition in 2020, he also recently released an album titled “Got To Be Tough“.
Toots moved to Kingston as a young man where he found glory in music, The Maytals was one of the most if not the most popular Jamaican music group in the 60s and made music for Coxsone Dodd, Prince Buster, Byron Lee and other top producers at the time.
One of the most coveted names in reggae, the man who helped to name the genre Toots Hibbert, unfortunately, passed away on September 11th, 2020 at age 77.

The Reggae legend was in a medically induced Coma at the University Hospital of the West Indies were he also reportedly did a COVID-19 test after experiencing respiratory difficulties.
