Reggae Boyz Head Coach Heimir Hallgrimsson aims to make an immediate impact as he sets foot in Jamaica on Wednesday night to start his official stint. The former Icelandic head coach says he will employ a hands-on approach to his role as the Reggae Boyz coach. The 55-year-old detailed that his focus for the first couple of weeks is to attend and observe local players playing in the Jamaica Premier League (JPL).

The Icelander signed a 3-year contract late last year, taking effect earlier this month. When a TVJ reporter interviewed the coach, he was in a joyous mood as he arrived on the Island with his family. The coach plans on training with local players to get to know them for at least two months before selecting the top players. According to the experienced tactician, “It’s not about loading in players just to sign to play for Jamaica if we don’t use them, if we don’t have space in the team to use them, am not going to call them.”

Hallgrimsson, who has a wealth of expertise in the game, is no newbie to the Fifa World Cup. The coach guided Iceland to qualification for the 2018 World Cup, which took place in Russia. Hallgrimsson also said he plans to prioritize the most “necessary players,” even though he knows Jamaica lacks depth in most areas.

Considering CONCACAF was awarded six spots for the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, Hallgrimsson is expected to Qualify the Reggae Boyz for the 2026 World Cup, with players like Leon Bailey, Bobby Reid, Antonio and Nathan Pinnock available to the coach who ply their trade in the world’s best league the English Premier League (EPL).

The Reggae Boyz head coach concluded the interview by stating that every player is free to want to play for Jamaica as long as they’re prepared to fight for their place in the team. Hallgimsson’s first engagement since he oversaw last year’s friendly matches against World Cup champions Argentina and Cameroon will be against Mexico in the Nations League in March.
