An 18-year-old woman is mourning the accidental death of her four-month-old daughter, which occurred last week Friday. As per the young lady, the baby’s father placed a half-filled bucket of water next to their bed to flush the toilet.
Unaware of the bucket’s presence, the young mother placed her daughter on the bed, used pillows to hem her in, and went outside to fetch more water from a standpipe. Upon returning, she did not see the baby where she left her.
“I didn’t see her, so I asked her father, ‘Did you take up the baby?’ He said no… When I went into the room, I saw the pillow on the ground, stepped in water, and found her upside down in the bucket with her feet shaking,” the mother said to the Jamaica Star.
The baby was reportedly rushed to the hospital but died shortly after arrival.
The female, whose name nor location was mentioned, stated that she’s “depressed” at the moment because the baby was her “everything”. According to the teen, she was hoping for the best for her daughter despite getting pregnant at a young age.
The tragedy happened on July 5, just two days after Hurricane Beryl passed. She told the news outlet that she was staying with her child’s father in a rural community when the incident took place.
Superintendent Lloyd Darby of the Portland Police Division stated that the police are investigating the baby’s death and have not yet determined if criminal charges will be filed.
