Journalist Attempts to Shame Man for Proposing at KFC; KFC, Coca-Cola, Puma and More Help With the Wedding – Watch Videos
Love is a powerful force that can be found in the most unexpected places, and at times it is accompanied by a marriage proposal. This was the case for South African couple Hector Mkansi and Nonhlanhla Soldaat, who recently captured the attention of the internet with a display of love at a KFC restaurant.
The couple was thrown into the spotlight after a journalist criticized the man for proposing to his girlfriend at the fast food restaurant. The journalist, who goes by the name of Anele on Twitter, tweeted, “SA men are so broke they even propose at KFC..they have absolutely no class. I mean who proposes at KFC #KFCProposal.”
37-year-old Hector and 28-year-old Nonhlanhla got engaged midway through their meal in November. The video of their “#KFCProposal” has been shared more than 25,000 times since being posted.
The video shows Hector on his knees, smiling up at his partner, who appears to be shedding tears of joy as she constantly wipes her eyes. Cheers fill the crowded restaurant as everyone watches Hector place the ring on Nonhlanhla’s finger.

In 2010, Hector and Nonhlanhla met at a funeral, and in 2012 they had a small wedding ceremony. Hector said that he knew they did not have the wedding of his wife’s dreams, but that was all they could afford. He decided to have a second wedding and got new rings since he didn’t like the first ones. Hector surprised her with the rings at her favourite place to eat, KFC, and had the staff members partake in his proposal by putting the rings in the meals.
Anele’s attempt to shame Hector was unsuccessful because various powerhouse companies, such as Puma, KFC, and Coca-Cola, praised the couple and offered gifts to offset their expenses. KFC South Africa provided a wedding planner, Coca-Cola offered soft drinks for the wedding reception, Uber and Audi offered to help the couple get around on their honeymoon, and Lexus extended its generosity to assist with travel arrangements.
In addition, airlines Kulula and Mango pledged to fly the newlyweds to their honeymoon destination. Smaller companies, moved by Hector and Nonhlanhla’s love story, also offered to contribute towards the couple’s wedding jewellery, spa treatments, and home furniture.
The happy couple had a wedding beyond their wildest dreams on December 31.
