Jamaica on Sunday faced off against Canada at the BMO Field, in their penultimate match of the final leg of the Concacaf World Cup qualifiers and even though they wanted to secure a win to add to their 8 point standing, unfortunately, that could not have been done since they were defeated by 4 goals.
The game was played at a fast pace and it was if Canada wanted to make their first-place finish in the table look extra pretty with points as they pressured the Reggae Boyz from the very beginning of the match with Cyle Larin making an early 4th-minute attempt which should have shaken up the Jamaicans a bit to tighten their defences but sadly, Cyle managed to magically squeeze through their half in the 13th minute of play to score the first goal for his team.
The Reggae Boyz were again stunned by the playing quality of the Canadians who managed to execute another first-half goal with Tajon Buchannan who managed to put the ball in the back of the net in the 44th minute of the game.
The second half started with Jamaica looking to turn up the inferno on Canada, however, Javain Brown who was playing in the midfield tackled one of his opponents too hard and received the first yellow card of the game in the 43rd minute of play. He was later substituted in the 46th minute of the game to bring on Tarick Ximines.
The Reggae Boyz as well as Canada made several other substitutions but while Jamaica sought to have their midfield amped up with energized players, their opposition was doing just the same with their defensive positions.
Regardless of the changes made by the Jamaican team, it was just not enough to hold off Canada, who capitalized on their substitutions to get the ball quickly into the box of the “Boyz” to score their third goal in the 82nd minute with Junior Hoilett.
The game was not over with the third goal either as frustration might have gotten the best of the Reggae Boyz who scored an own goal on themself with a fumble from Adrian Mariappa who was at the time playing in a defensive position.
The win for Canada marks the second time their country has qualified for the Fifa World Cup in 36 years since 1986.
As for the Concacaf World Cup Qualifiers table, Canada has closed it out with the lead of 28 points, winning 8 games, drawing 4 and losing 1 while the United States is at second on 22 points, Mexico at third with 22 points also, Costa Rica in fourth place with 19 points, Panama in 5th place with 18 points, El Salvador in 6th place with 10 points, Jamaica in 7th place with 8 points and Honduras in 8th place with 4 points.
As for the Reggae Boyz even though they have not gained a qualifying spot for the Fifa World Cup competition they still have a match in hand which they will play on March 30th against Honduras.
