Following an emergency evacuation at the White House on Sunday, July 02, 2023, when a white substance was found inside the building during a routine inspection, US media reports confirmed on Tuesday that it tested positive for cocaine.
The Washington Post outlined that law enforcement reported a positive preliminary test on the substance for cocaine.
As reported by the BBC, Secret Service Spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi said the substance was found inside a work area in the West Wing on Sunday night. The fire department declared it “non-hazardous” following their investigation.
The item has been sent for further testing, and an investigation is ongoing to find out how it reached inside the building.
The West Wing houses the Chief of Staff, the vice-president’s office, the president’s Oval Office, and the Situation Room. In addition, many other staff members have access to the area.
President Joe Biden was away with his family at the Camp David residence when the substance was found.
